This is the professional weblog of Rick Scheibner, school counselor in Hermiston, Oregon. Many professionals are moving away from a blogging platform in favor of social media. However, I have decided that I need this to keep a record of my thoughts, ideas, and links that are related to the school counseling profession. My goal is to generate meaningful professional content that will in turn spark dialogue among school counselors. This content is for public consumption, and I welcome any comments you may have along the way.
The content of this blog will focus on:
- Counseling and guidance program standards at the local, state and national levels, including
- Academic Development
- Career Development
- Personal/Social Development
- Community Involvement
- Classroom and small group curricula
- Relevant research
- Behavioral health in children and adolescents
- Student advocacy
- Resources for parents and teachers

About Me
I received my Master’s degree in School Counseling from Oregon State University in 2002, and began working for the Hermiston School District as an elementary counselor in August of that year. After spending seven years in that position, I served as a middle school Dean of Students for one year. I now serve as the counselor at West Park Elementary, home of the Wildcats and one of two new elementary buildings in my town. Professional groups include the Oregon School Counselor Association and the American School Counselor Association. I have previous experience as a substitute teacher, music teacher, and school board member.
In addition to being a husband and dad, my spare time activities involve photography and music. I make my home in Hermiston, Oregon.
